At Provantage Paving We Know Concrete Too.

What is the difference between cement and concrete?

Although the terms cement and concrete often are used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and portland cement. Cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent of the concrete mix, by volume. Through a process called hydration, the cement and water harden and bind the aggregates into a rocklike mass. This hardening process continues for years meaning that concrete gets stronger as it gets older.

Can you pour concrete over grass?

The answer is no, for most situations. Generally, pouring concrete works best as a well-thought-out and planned event. Provantage knows that most people want a structure to last as long as possible.

Is It okay if it rains after pouring concrete?

Unpredictable heavy rains and thunderstorms can cause massive damage to freshly poured concrete. A new concrete structure becomes soft with poor abrasion resistance and strength if there is excess water on its surface. The chances are that cracks may appear on the exterior after drying. Properly preparing the concrete mix and timing the pour is essential to prevent damage on freshly laid concrete surfaces. Some contractors build protective enclosures around the work site using plastic sheets and wood. It prevents rainwater from collecting on the concrete surface. The concrete structure is not wholly damaged even if it starts raining soon after the pour. It all depends on the timing and the curing stage of the concrete. If the rain begins 2 to 4 hours after pouring the concrete, the surface will not be damaged. Similarly, if it rains soon after the finishing stage, rainwater will not cause much damage if it does not seep into the surface.

How long does concrete last?

When you use traditional concrete the substance lasts for decades when properly installed and maintained. Even against the cold winters of Illinois and Wisconsin, our top grade concrete stays strong for many years.

How long can be walked on?

In most general situations, the following day you can walk on the concrete without damage. Depending on weather conditions and some other variables the curing time of concrete can vary. Generally after 7 days it is considered to be cured. The full strength can take about a month.

Does concrete crack?

Yes, all concrete cracks! This is due to the evaporation of water coming out of the concrete as it cures. This is not a reflection of poor workmanship. Provantage knows how to handle the curing process to ensure your installation will last for a very long time.

Why does concrete crack?

Concrete will develop cracks over time. The goal is to minimize and control the amount of cracking by using the correct mix and quality workmanship. The primary causes of cracking are stress related due to the shrinkage of the concrete as it cures, a poor sub-grade, and general wear and tear due to use. This is the primary reason it is best to have an experienced contractor like Provantage Paving prepare and pour your concrete project.
